NEW DELHI, JULY 29: Faculty members of All India Institute of Medical Sciences are rooting for the removal of Medical Council of India chairman Ketan Desai from membership of the decision making Institute body of AIIMS. Desai’s residence in Ahmedabad was subjected to CBI raids on July 17 and seizures of incriminating papers and unaccounted wealth worth one and a half crore rupees have been reported.

In a letter to the Union Health Minister C.P.Thakur today, the Faculty Associaiton of AIIMS appealed that “such a person of doubtful integrity” should not continue in the highest decision making body of the institute. “He should not be allowed to participate in any of the meetings till such time he comes out clean,” it said.

Desai is also the president elect of the Indian Medical Associaiton a non governmental grouping of doctors.

Health Minister C.P.Thakur had before flying off to Patna today had denied knowledge of the raid when asked by reporters.

Desai is a Government nominee to the MCI which is a statutory body and he was renomionated after his five year term expired last year.

As MCI chairman his main job includes granting recognition to medical colleges and giving accreditation to medical teachers.
