GUWAHATI, May 24: The rebels in the ruling Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today projected Education Minister and senior party leader Thaneswar Boro as their candidate to replace Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta even as the Mahanta camp vehemently denied any such development.

Rebel leader and former PWD Minister Atul Bora said Thaneswar Boro has accepted their proposal to become the alternative leader. “Boro is a senior leader and he had held the post of president of the party during the crucial period when the Asom Gana Parishad had faced a split in 1991,” Bora said. But the Mahanta camp dismissed any such possibility and said Thaneswar Boro has already issued written statements that he was behind the Chief Minister and that he had not joined the rebel camp.

Party general secretary Nagen Sarma said Boro was indeed approached by the dissidents, but he had already turned their offer down. “Boro is very much behind Mahanta,” Sarma said.

Boro incidentally comes from the same Purbanchaliya Loka Parishad(PLP) from which Atul Bora too had come to the AGP in 1985. While Boro was chairman of the Purbanchaliya Loka Parishad till 1985, Atul Bora was his general secretary.

Party general secretary Sarma on the other hand told mediapersons here today that though Bhrigu Phukan, Brindaban Goswami and Pulakesh Barua had joined hands with Atul Bora, the group did not enjoy the support of too many MLAs.“All partymen have been urged to resist any move to remove Mahanta and dislodge the AGP-led alliance government,” Sarma added.

He also criticised the Asom Gana Parishad rebels and said it was not fair of them to have revealed government proceedings as well as Cabinet meeting resolutions to the press.

“It is an internal matter of the party. They should try to resolve it within the party forum,” Sarma said.

But Atul Bora said most of the party’s 64 MLAs have already pledged support to the move to remove Mahanta. “We are calling a meeting of all the MLAs,” the rebel leader further added.
