The opposition Asom Gana Parishad today described the Congress government in the state, led by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, as a ‘‘total failure’’ and asked the people to get ready to oust the ruling party in the next elections. Election to the state Assembly is now less than a year away.Armed with a Guwahati High Court order, which directed police and district authorities not to detain any vehicle transporting AGP supporters to a ‘‘Dispur Chalo’’ programme, the regional party brought in about 20,000 members from all over the state for a massive roadshow today.AGP president Brindaban Goswami also addressed an impromptu public meeting in front of the state secretariat at Dispur. Goswami said it was time the state was delivered from the ‘‘misrule’’ of the Congress.‘‘There is anarchy all around. The law and order situation has slipped out of the government’s control. Bangladeshi infiltrators patronised by the Congress have encroached large tracts of forests and riverine areas. Corruption has reached an all-time high,’’ Goswami said. The AGP president, in particular, pointed at the recent Assam Police constable selection scandal and said money had become the sole consideration in selecting even constables. ‘‘Not a single brick has moved in the name of repairing the massive damage done by the floods last year, while crime against women and girls have increased manifold,’’ Goswami alleged.Former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who had quit as party chief over bigamy charges three and a half years ago, also took part in today’s programme.Meanwhile, AGP spokesman Jagadish Bhuyan told reporters that they would soon announce a series of programmes aimed at building an opinion against the ‘‘misdeeds and misrule’’ of the Congress government. Interestingly, the state BJP too has geared up its activities with a similar ‘‘Dispur Chalo’’ programme organised earlier this month. Both AGP and BJP, however, have been careful in avoiding queries regarding a possible tie-up of the non-Congress forces in view of the coming elections.
