PATIALA, June 3: The patients, doctors and health staff of the local Mata Kaushalaya Hospital held a black flag demonstration in front of the Out Patients Department to lodge their protest against the “provocative and highhanded action” of the district administration in allegedly ransacking the agitation camp of Mata Kaushalaya Hospital Bachao Committee.
The convenor of the bachao committee Dr M. S. Randhawa in a written complaint to the medical superintendent of the hospital, has alleged that on the evening of June 1, a heavy police force, which included horse- mounted cops and anti-riot squad, led by a senior administrative officer, not only ransacked a temporary shed at the dharna site, but also took away their belongings.
The committee maintained that the mounted police force which made an unannounced entry into the residential area of the hospital, did not even care about the safety of small children playing nearby and the elderly, who were saved from injury due to the swift action by the hospital staff. The committee described the administration’s action as most irresponsible, undemocratic and illegal. It maintained that the action was a part of a conspiracy to terrorise the hospital employees, who were engaged in an agitation against the allegedly unlawful encroachment of the hospital land to build a judicial-cum-administrative complex.
The committee said that by doing so, the district administration has also tried to sabotage an initiative by the chief secretary and health secretary, Government of Punjab to settle the issue on merit. At today’s joint rally, the bachao committee gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the district administration to apologise for its “reprehensible” action and return the belongings of theagitators, failing which the committee would intensify its agitation.
