Ajit Agarkar appeared on the Indian cricket scene as a replacement for Kapil Dev. But after nearly a decade, it is a story of unfulfilled potential and umpteen comebacks. So unlikely of his predecessor.
But though Agarkar has had his moments, they have been few and far between, and the recent rise of Irfan Pathan and Laxmipathy Balaji, to add to Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra’s presence in the set up, has resulted in him being sidelined to a fringe option, especially in Tests.
But so typical of this wiry Mumbaikar, this reduced status has only fuelled his determination. ‘‘Now there are five or six guys vying for a place in the team. So you will have to be on your toes.
I never worry about the competition. My job is to do my best for the country. Playing for India is the easiest way of motivation, and not being a regular member of the team provides that something extra,’’ Agarkar said here on Wednesday.
Then one should not forget that injuries have often hindered Agarkar’s march, forcing him into long layoffs. ‘‘Injuries are part and parcel of a sportsman’s career and life, especially that of a pace bowler. I will have to try to remain as injury-free as possible and I believe for the last couple of years I have been quite good at that,’’ he said.
A successful Australian tour brought new confidence in Agarkar. Now he is slowly exorcising the ghosts of self-doubt, which many a time in the past resulted in inconsistent performance. ‘‘There is a lot of confidence after the Australian tour. I have to improvea bit more though,’’ Agarkar signs off.
