Betting on cricket and tennis is old stuff. Now, there is even betting on weather. Police have arrested eight persons involved in betting on weather, along with cricket and tennis.

On a tip-off that a racket of large scale betting on phone was being operated from a building in Shantinagar area of Mira Road in north Mumbai, police raided the building and nabbed the eight persons. A television set, several telephones and Rs 80,000 in cash were also seized from the persons, the police informed, adding that the alleged leader of the betting gang, Pankajbhai Gangar, was absconding.

The economic offences wing (EOW) of the Mumbai police yesterday raided a cricket betting racket carried on by one Vinod Asrani alias Sindhi from Rajesh Colony in Laxmi Nagar, Chembur. Asrani, who has been arrested, is said to be an associate of the underworld don Chhota Rajan. The network of his activities is reported to be in crores of rupees and spread in several countries. His accomplice Harish Muthreja is still at large. During the India-Sri Lanka cricket match yesterday, the duo had placed bets at Re 0.60 and Rs 1.50 on Sri Lanka and India respectively. During the raid, the police seized five telephones and TV sets.
