In the third such case since June, a 28-year-old resident of Pasena Khurd village in Panipat tried to commit suicide at the Haryana Police headquarters in Sector 6, Panchkula, on Saturday.

Suman said she was forced to take the step because the police did not take any action against her brother’s killers. She had consumed several medicines and was vomiting when the police took her to the General Hospital-6. Her condition is reported to be stable.

Suman is married and has a four-year-old son.

According to reports, Suman came to Zirakpur from her village in a bus. She went to a chemist shop there and asked for poison. As the shopkeeper refused to give her one, she picked up the medicines lying there and consumed them.

After that, the police said, she reached DGP Ranjiv Dalal’s office and said she wanted to meet him. “As she was told that the DGP was not in his office, the woman said she had consumed poison and started vomiting and tearing her clothes,” said the official spokesperson for the police headquarters.

He added that the officers present there immediately rushed her to the hospital. “In her statement, the woman said her brother was killed by his in-laws, but the Panipat police did not take any action against the accused. She alleged that her brother was abducted on September 21 and his body was found after around two days in a nearby village. The body bore several injuries,” said a police officer who did not want to be named.

At the hospital, Suman was not in a position to talk. All she could say was that it was the laxity of the police that resulted in her brother Nitish Kumar’s death.

The body of Nitish was recently found in a drain at a village near Panipat. In her complaint to the police, Suman had alleged that earlier her two brothers Nitish and Parvesh and mother Sulekha had been booked on the charges of abducting a minor girl. On September 8, a local court acquitted them of the charges, but the girl’s family allegedly continued to threaten them.

On September 21, the police said, Nitish was allegedly abducted from his village and his body was found on September 23. According to Suman, though her family approached the Panipat police, they did not pay any heed. She also alleged that one of the ASIs misbehaved with her.

The Panipat police, however, said at least four people had been arrested in connection with the case and there had been no laxity on their part.

Past cases

June 9: In a major embarrassment to the Haryana Police, a 25-year-old rape victim from Rohtak committed suicide at the headquarters. Sarita, who had come to the office along with her two daughters, had claimed that she was raped by a constable and head constable of the Rohtak Crime Branch staff and was being harassed and threatened by them. It was after the police failed to take any action in the case that she took the extreme step.

September 8: A ruckus was created at the DGP office after a resident of Mustafabad village in Yamunanagar district, Shamshida, threatened to commit suicide if she was not allowed to meet the DGP. The woman claimed that she was manhandled by the Yamunanagar police and some shopkeepers, which resulted in her miscarriage in 2007.
