A week after the tsunami played havoc in Southeast Asia, Assam has woken up to check its disaster preparedness. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi chaired a marathon meeting on Sunday evening to gear up emergency preparations.

The meeting came after an earthquake warning for Assam issued by some American scientists on Saturday. A US-based agency had said aftershocks of the quake off Sumatra were moving northward and might offset major seismic disturbance in Assam.

‘‘We are taking the warnings very seriously and leaving no stone unturned in raising the awareness and preparedness among people and officials,’’ Gogoi said. The state has drawn up a plan to constitute core groups of well-trained personnel in every district to impart training to the common people.
