Congress today claimed success in getting the proposed tax return form withdrawn by the Union government and continued to express ‘‘hope that something positive’’ would come out of its demand to scale down the increase in petroleum price.
Meanwhile, the Congress Core Committee met this evening and requested the Prime Minister look into the fuel price hike again.
Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the government responded to the party request to withdraw the new form, which could have been troublesome for individual tax payers. He thanked the government for its sensitive response and described the decision as a victory for the party.
Asked if he applied the same yardstick for the its unmet demand for decreasing the petro price hike — and found it a failure of the party — Singhvi said it is not yet a closed chapter. ‘‘Communication is going on at various levels and more positive, good things will come out. We cannot attach a time limit to it, but we are hopeful and talks are on,’’ Singhvi said.
Ask Natwar, says Cong about allegations
NEW DELHI: Congress Party feigned ignorance about allegations by former external affairs minister Natwar Singh that “higher-ups” in the party were framing him in the Volcker scam. Natwar had said in a television interview that he was victim of an “international conspiracy” and some leaders of the Congress were trying to “fix” him and son Jagat Singh. “We have seen it only in press reports. As far as any material related to the investigation is concerned, it should go to the authorities concerned. If you want details of the allegations, you have to ask Singh himself. Only he would know what he means by it all,” Abhishek Singhvi said.
