Bigger than Bhakra Nangal, it will be the largest dam in the country if all goes well. And guess where it’s coming up: on the Manipur-Mizoram border. The 15,000 MW Tipaimukh Hydro Electric project on the Barak river has received the techno-economic clearance from the Central Electricity Authority this month.First proposed in 1955, this is first major clearance it has got. The fate of the dam will become clear in the next six months when it is supposed to get clearances from Public Investment Board, the Environment Ministry and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. In 1995, when the Manipur Assembly voted that they did not need the dam, its fate seemed sealed. It was revived only four months back ago NEEPCO (North Eastern Power Corportion) signed an agreement with the Manipur and the Mizoram government.
