PUNE, DEC 10: Close on the heels of the constituents of the ruling National Democratic Alliance adopting aggressive stand over Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s statement on Ayodhya, Union Home Minister L K Advani today restrained from making any political statement during his day-long visit here. Advani, however, had a closed-door one-to-one meeting with former Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief Rajendra Singh.

Advani, who flew down to the city in the morning, attended many functions of organisations known for their affiliation to the Sangh Parivar. Despite several provocations from members of audience and dignitaries present on the dias, Advani chose not to refer to any political issue confronting the NDA at present.

What raised eyebrows in political circles here was the meeting with Rajendra Singh, who has been resting here for more than a month now. Local RSS leaders sought to underplay the meeting as a courtesy call. However, nobody was allowed at the meeting. Media persons and photographers were kept out of the premises of the meeting venue.

According to RSS sources, after formal introduction with local RSS leaders, Advani went to Rajendra Singh’s room and the door was shut immediately. Nobody knows what transpired at the meeting. The discussions went on for about half an hour. Rajendra Singh too refused to say anything about the meeting when media persons contacted him. In fact, media persons were let inside on condition that they ask nothing about the meeting.

In the morning, Advani had turned down a request from media persons for a meeting him. A large number of media persons, who had gathered at Balgandharva Rangmandir — where Advani felicitated freedom fighters of Dadara-Nagar-Haveli, sent a message to Advani. Advani’s reply was that he knew what the media persons would ask him, and that he was not interested in answering them.

An RSS group raised the slogan of Prabhu Ramchandra ki jai

when Advani rose to deliver his speech. Advani chose to ignore it.
