With A room already marked for him, Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani showed up at the BJP headquarters today. This development implies a far greater involvement of Advani in the running of the party than before. His lieutenant, party president Venkaiah Naidu, was there to receive him.

Advani made no attempt to downplay his future role. He told reporters, ‘‘As requested by the party president, I would be visiting frequently to help in organisational matters.’’

Advani said that even while in the government, Naidu used to consult him regularly on party affairs. ‘‘(Now that) I am out of the government, I would be visiting the party office more often as requested by him,’’ he added.

The former deputy PM said there was a need to revive the party’s three main constituents — the cadre, Sangh Parivar and committed voters — which it failed to nurture during its six-year rule.

‘‘Our party ran the government well but didn’t nurse its constituency, comprising the cadre and workers, Sangh Parivar and the voters that the party had built over the last 25-30 years. Now, there is a need to revive it,’’ he said.

‘‘I had said that a Member of Parliament, even if he does the best of work in Parliament but doesn’t move in his constituency and in the party, it would go against him and that was why 50 per cent of our sitting members lost in the elections,’’ he added.
