Adulterated milk turned back during surprise checks

NASHIK, SEPT 19: In a joint operation by the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), the Dairy Development Department (DDD) and the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), 19,250 litres of adulterated milk was turned back during surprise checks in the last three days.

About 80,000 litres of milk arrives in Nashik daily from Jalgaon and Ahmednagar districts. About 60,000 litres of it is branded and packed in poly-bags. On the first day, 16,500 litres of milk being carted in poly-bags was turned back as it’s density failed to meet the specified standards.

The surprise checks had a significant impact and on the second day only 1,550 litres of milk was found adulterated. On the third day yesterday, only 1,200 litres were found adulterated.

An FDA official said that the checking of milk would be a regular affair despite the department being shortstaffed. He said that nine inspectors were posted daily for the job. The reason for the surprise checks was said to be the losses being faced by government dairies, which are less patronised by the people.
