MUMBAI, SEPT 16: Giridhar Adhikari from RCF School (Chembur) held former National B player Paranjpe to a draw in the Senior Division chess tournament, organised by the Bombay Chess Association, at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works Canteen, yesterday night. Second-seeded Paranjpe and Adhikari now, alongwith 10 other players, remained on the second spot with 1.5 points each after the second-round.

On the top board, Adhikari had a bright chance to win against Paranjape when the latter had only half a minute left against Adhikari’s six minutes on the clock. Both players had a pawn each on the board, inexperienced Adhikari surprisingly offered a draw which Paranjape accepted immediately.

Hot favourites, third seed Shirish Kumar, fourth seed Ramesh Khadye from Bank of Baroda and seventh seed Junior Collegiate player Harish Narayan from Ruia have won both their games. They defeated Gaurav Hingne, Chandrahas Bhurke and Ganesh Kamath, respectively.

On Monday night, top seed and only FIDE-rated player in this event,PB Bhilare, surprisingly lost to Mangesh Patel.

Entrant’s Division champion Niharika Thakkar, a 10-year-old student from Vissanji Academy School, outwitted her senior rival Dilip Rawal in only 18 moves. She has joined the band of 32 players who lead the field of 53 players with two points each at the end of the second-round.

Other noted players to win both the rounds are Ganesh Bhilare, Vivek Thoopal of Chetna College, Nitin Warde and schoolboys Parage Terwadekar and Nikhil Bhat.

Solanki nets two

Two goals by Laxmikant Solanki were the feature of Dadar Young Boys’ 3-0 triumph over BPCL (Marketing) in the MDFA-conducted Division III-A football league at the St Xavier’s ground, Parel, today.

Amit Makhawana was the other goal-getter for the winners.

Podar stun Mahatma

RA Podar College rallied from a one-game deficit to shock top seed Mahatma College 9-15 15-3 15-6 in the final knockout round of the inter-college volleyball tournament held at University Sports Pavilion here today.Mahatma, runner-up last year, were expected to cruise into the four-team super league, but Podar had other plans. The girls lifted their game, smashed well, and served a warning to the other teams.

NM beatMithibai

Narsee Monjee Commerce and Mithibai renewed their long-time rivalry today in the table tennis room at NM College. They were meeting in the U-19 girls zonal finals in the Multigames inter-school tournament. The score stood at 2-2 after Bindu Suvarna had rallied back to win her second straight singles for Mithibai. But that was to be Mithibai’s only consolation, as Suvra Dasgupta defeated Sarkhel in straight games to make it 3-2 for NM.

In other matches, Parle Tilak blanked Sane Guruji to qualify for the zonal final.
