In yet another brutal reminder of the Bhagalpur blinding cases, a 14-year-old boy was first beaten up and then acid poured into his eyes and face on the charge that he was a thief. Victim Gautam Yadav is undergoing treatment in a local hospital where doctors say both his eyes have been badly damaged.

The incident took place in Bishanpur village under Kahalgaon block of Bhagalpur district during the wee hours on Sunday. The perpetrator, Devendra Sahu, has been arrested. FIRs have been lodged from both sides.

The police said Gautam, son of a local curd seller, was allegedly trying to break the lock of Devendra Shau’s shop and was caught. Sahu first bashed him up and then poured acid on his head that scalded his eyes and face.

However, Sahu in a bid to defend himself has said in his FIR that he used the acid container to defend himself and the chemical accidentally drained out and fell on the boy’s head. He said Gautam was a known thief of the area and in the past too he had attempted to burgle his shop. The victim’s mother on the other hand said her son was not a thief and referred to an old rivalry with the Sahu family as the reason behind his son being attacked with acid. Bhagalpur SP Kundan Krishnan claimed that Gautam indeed was caught while trying to steal.
