For the second time this week, women of Kasturba Nagar slum today used their ‘killer instinct’ to get their five companions—Leelabai Sangole, Savita Wanjari, Pinky Shambharkar, Anjanabai Borkar and Bhagirathibai Adakne—out of police custody.
The five were arrested in connection with the lynching of serial rapist Akku Yadav.
Today, when they were produced in court after a day’s custody, angry women from the slum gheraoed the court at 11 am and forced the police to tell the judge that they (police) would not need their custody.
In an unprecedented series of events through the day, they forced two hearings on the same bail plea and finally secured the release of the five women. The women were led by activist V Chandra and supported by many women’s organisations. Their strength grew manifold with Sangh Parivar and Shiv Sena women’s bodies also backing them.
The hearing first took place in the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) R N Mehre. The State CID (Crime) is reported to have told the court that they had no evidence against the women and that they would not need their custody.
The judge apparently couldn’t come to any conclusion and reserved the order till Thursday morning.
