A police constable of Thane Crime Branch died on Monday while attempting to save an accused trying to commit suicide. The accused, Rajesh Shivlani, was trying to kill himself by jumping off the third floor of the Thane Police Commissionerate building.

At around 3 pm, Shivlani was brought in from Thane Town Police Station for interrogation. Constable T.Y. Kadam was deputed to get him from the police station and back. After having lunch on a small terrace at the crime branch, Shivlani suddenly lurched towards the parapet.

Kadam jumped after him, and as the two went over, tried to hold on to Shivlani while clutching a cement pipe protruding along the parapet with the other. The pipe gave away and both of them came crashing down on concrete, three storeys below.
