For the first time since the inception of Indian fashion, accessories, crucial elements in fashion are high on every designer8217;s list and were one of the highlights at the recently-concluded fashion weeks. Bags, scarves, shawls, wrap dresses, jewellery8230;accessories are simply indispensable.

Nods city-based designer Jas Lakhmana, who customizes accessories as per the outfit she designs and her client8217;s profile. 8220;I never let a great outfit be ruined by poor accessories and so besides helping them choose the right stuff, I even tell them how to sport these,8217;8217; the 8216;it8217; accessories of the festive and fall-winter season are belts, scarves, hankies, embroidered bags in fabrics, clutch bags, poly-blend formal shoes and antique jewellery, especially earrings. Add some bling for the festive look, especially traditional embroidery like dabka and gota-patti and go in for metallic colours. 8220;Belts are a must-have and I 8216;m doing them in all sizes, styles and materials. Braided and satin belts are dressy and chic,8217;8217; adds Jas. Babi recommends waist belts with sarees, armlets, brocade and swaroski embellished bags and big cocktail rings and earrings.

Jewellery designer Deepti Sudhindra has found her niche by etching Henry David Thoreau8217;s poetry on to silver, transforming ubiquitous coconut shells into delicate beads, pendants and necklaces. 8220;I take a coconut shells and embellish it with silver,8221; explains Sudhindra, 32, whose design element is essentially Indian. At Trenz, Fun Republic, its an overdose of long pearl chains that rule. 8220;Those in pink are high on the trend-o-meter,8221; Suraj, proprietor of Trenz tell us, as he showcases big, bold belts and a variety of traditional earrings, which he feels go perfect with the western wear. Agrees Anjul, a jewellery designer, who put up a stall at Whispering Willows. 8220;With the festive season on, Kundan is flaunted in a big way,8221; she says.

Turning scarves, shawls and wraps into a heritage label is Bappaditya Biswas, 36, who founded Bai Lou in 2002. Closely working with weavers of Bengal, Biswas uses Jamdani and double cloth weaving techniques. 8220;We don8217;t believe in embellishments on top of the fabric. Everything is woven in and comes out as a finished product,8221; says Biswas. 8220;Wearing scarves is a recent trend in India,8221; says Biswas. And the scarf has reinvented itself and is an affordable way to liven up the look of any outfit, adding both colour and pattern to an ensemble. Your bag, hair, belt loop, neck, sport it anywhere and casually, but choose a fabric that flows and is not stiff. As for bags, patent leather ones in bold colours, formal clutches, big bags with gold details are what you must bag.
