The familiar story is that Abu Salem fell out with his mentor Dawood Ibrahim in the late ’90s when his upward mobility in the D-Company was challenged. But with fresh evidence of his Karachi connections emerging, investigators are questioning the theory.
Investigators are in possession of documents that show he stayed in Pakistan for long and got married to Monica Bedi in Karachi as late as August 20, 2001—just a year before they were arrested in Lisbon.
• Salem, in the name of Arsalan Mohsin Ali, had submitted an affidavit on February 15, 2000 in a court at Karachi, saying that he had married one Yasmin of Karachi on August 30, 1996 and had now divorced her. The CBI had confirmed that Abu Salem had a Pakistani passport in the name of Arsalan Mohsin Ali.
• The marriage certificate says that on August 20, 2001, Arsalan Mohsin Ali (son of Mohammed Ali, Resident of Building No. 218, Tariq Road, Commercial Area, Karachi. Date of Birth: 2-2-1968) and Sana (d/o Malik Kamal), Building No. 218, Tariq Road, Commercial Area, Karachi. Date of Birth: 4-9-1974) got married in the presence of two witnesses, Mohammad Jameel and Mohd Anwar . The nikah was solemnised by Attaullah Khan Niazi. Monica was extradited from Portugal on charges that she had obtained forged passport in the name of Sana Malik Kamal from Kurnool, Hyderabad.
If Salem had in fact split with Dawood in the ’90s as was widely believed, it would not have been possible for both dons to peacefully co-exist in Karachi.
