Two Dahod-based doctors, who were evading arrest in the Bilkis Yakub Rasool gangrape case, surrendered before a court in Ahmedabad.

Dr Arun Kumar Prasad and his wife, Dr Sangeeta Prasad, accused of tampering with evidence, surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ahmedabad (Rural), on Monday evening. They have been remanded to judicial custody till April 30. Non-bailable warrants had been issued against them on April 22 after they failed to present themselves before the court though summons were served on April 19.

The CBI, in its chargesheet filed in the CJM’s court on April 19, had mentioned that the couple conducted post-mortem on seven members of Bilkis’s family at a primary health centre. It had also alleged that the doctors did not conduct any tests on Bilkis who was five months pregnant when she was gangraped on March 3, 2002. The doctors, also charged with dereliction of duty and suppression of facts, were shown as among the six additional accused along with the 14 original accused named in the FIR.

All six had been asked to be present in court on April 22. While the accused policemen asked for more time, the doctors chose to remain absent. The court then issued non-bailable warrants against the doctors.
