Some years back, studying, working in another country and gaining knowledge from probably the best people there was just a dream for every youngster. This dream can now come true by giving various entrance exams.

Out of the many exams, one such exam is the TOEFL. TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. To make you familiar with what is TOEFL, the information ahead would prove beneficial. It is designed to evaluate the English Proficiency of students whose native language is not English. TOEFL is a compulsory examination in the admission process for foreign students to colleges and universities in the United States.

Also, it is seen that admission to a school is not the end of the battle but the beginning. You must be able to understand enough English to make good grades in competition with native English-speaking students. This is what TOEFL tests, and this is why schools consider TOEFL a valuable examination.

  • Format: It basically consists of 3 sections.
    1. Listening Comprehension: In this you will listen to some people speaking in proper American English on audio tapes and you will be asked to answer questions based on conversations you have heard. This needs ability to pay full concentration and an `ear’ to catch American accent.
    2. Structure and Written Expression: It measures your ability to recognise the language that is appropriate for standard written English. This section, to score full, requires good base of English grammar.
    3. Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary: measures your ability to understand non-technical reading matter. The ability to comprehend matter in the passage given and answering questions based on them.
  • This test, written and administered by the Education Testing Service (ETS) Princeton, New Jersey, is administered several times in a year. But, even though it appears easy, a lot of preparation has to be taken care of prior to the test date.

    To assist you in the preparation and to make sure that you are well-prepared before the test, the Department of English Language Teaching Institute under Symbiosis is offering a preparatory course.
