On the lines of UK airline Virgin Atlantic’s hand and shoulder massage, Air India is now exploring the possibility of introducing the ‘oil-free’ ayurvedic massage on its flights. Civil Aviation Minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said today that he held discussions in this regard yesterday with Kerala Tourism Minister K.V. Thomas, AI officials and others.

‘‘Instead of oil, as is normally used by Ayurvedic physicians, cream and powder is being planned,’’ the Minister said.

AI sources said a feasibility study on ‘oil-free’ massage on the flight was on. Oil was being ruled out as it would be ‘‘messy’’ and separate enclosures would be needed, sources said. Discussions with certain ayurvedic companies were also on.

Some officials would be visiting the Kottakal Ayurvedashala soon and discussions with Thomas would continue in Thiruvananthapuram, the source added.
