NAGPUR, Nov 24: An ovarian tumour, weighing more than nine kgs and measuring 35 by 23 by 20 cms, was removed successfully from a middle-aged patient by the Shat Ayu Hospital and Research Centre here recently.
The operation was conducted by Dr Subrato Dasgupta and his team. The patient was discharged on the 12th post-operative day, following an uneventful stay at the hospital.
The patient, Gayabai Daduram Parmar from Betul, was suffering from absolute discomfort due to the large growth in the abdomen since the last two years. However, abject poverty kept her from seeking any medical help. But when the pain become unbearable, she sold her silver ornaments and cattle to raise Rs 5000 and travelled to Nagpur for treatment.
When the patient approached the Shat Ayu Hospital, she was initially advised to go to the Government Medical College, as the cost of treatment in private hospitals would be beyond her means. But, the patient persisted and Dr Dasgupta discussed the case with the management of the hospitaland arranged to do the case at a minimal cost.
The patient was taken for surgery on November 5. During the operation, the surgeons found that the tumour was a vertically mobile ovarian cyst. A 12 inches incision was made and the tumour, which was the equivalent of three fully developed babies, was removed with considerable difficulty.
Later, the histopathological studies conducted on the tumour by Dr R Ravi, revealed it as a case of serious cystadenoma. The anaesthesiologist was Dr Bhargava, while Sister Kavita assisted in the surgery.
