CHANDIGARH, Jan 9: Nine Indians registered first-round victories in the qualifying draw of the $10,000 Gold Flake Aces ITF Futures Men’s Tennis Tournament at the Chandigarh Club courts here today. At least three Indians are assured of moving into next round as they are scheduled to meet their own colleagues.
In the second round matches Saurav Panja (ATP ranking 1005) is pitted against Anup Minda; Anand Radhakrishnan faces Vijendra Laad (1179) and fifth seed Harsh Mankad (862) will cross swords against Anjan Viplav.
Harsh Mankad, the highest-ranked Indian player figuring in the qualifying draw, faced a tough battle against P Maggs of Great Britain before prevailing over his rival. Down by a set, Mankad staged a fine rally to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Wild card Vishal Uppal (1324) upset Aniola Filip of Poland (994) 6-2, 6-3. Another India to record win against a foreign competitor was Anand Radhakrishnan, who won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 against US’s Sonu Thomas.
