MUMBAI, July 3: Barring a few slogans by Laloo Yadav supporters in the Maharashtra Janata Dal, voting in the party elections went off peacefully with 75 per cent of the eligible voters casting their ballots at the State Janata Dal office here.

The Janata Dal presiding officer Faquir Mohammad Thakur, however, denied that there was a split in the state party on the lines of that between Sharad Yadav and Laloo Yadav supporters at the Centre. “All that happened was that about half a dozen Laloo supporters in Maharashtra refrained from casting their votes today. Our ballot papers, however, had the names of both the Yadavs,” he said.

The state office is unlikely to hold another election for Laloo supporters on Saturday, he said. “Today, we have merely completed the procedure as decreed by the Supreme Court. It is for the leaders at the Centre to decide if there has been a split in the party and if there will be another election on Saturday,” he said. Prominent among those who voted for the presidential polls were state party president Nihal Ahmed, Mrinal Gore, legislators Sambhaji Pawar and Venkappa Patki, Sripati Shinde and city unit president Vivek Khade.
