Painting a gloomy picture, the Institute of Economic Growth has said that the six per cent GDP growth posted in the first half might not be sustainable due to the onslaught of drought and demand constraints.
‘The good news from the GDP figures for the first quarter of the current fiscal may not be sustainable,’ it said in its latest ‘Monthly Monitor’.
GDP had shown a growth rate of six per cent in the first quarter of this fiscal as compared to 3.5 per cent in the same period of the previous year, with manufacturing and services sectors clocking 3.8 per cent and 9.7 per cent growth, IEG noted.
‘But this trend may not continue given the demand constraints and the existing drought situation, which is expected to reduce the kharif output by 10 per cent in this year,” the report reasoned.
