AHMEDABAD, March 23: In a swift early-morning operation, six notorious gangsters from Mumbai, owing allegiance to ganglord Chhota Shakeel, were shot dead by city police during an encounter inside a two-storey house in Chengiz Pol in Dariapur locality of Ahmedabad on Monday. Some 10 kgs of RDX (research and development explosive), 39 hand-grenades, two AK-47 rifles, five revolvers, two pistols and about 800 live cartridges were seized from the slain gangsters.

The bloody encounter which probably saved Ahmedabad from the dance of death enacted in Coimbatore recently, lasted barely 20 minutes. The police got going after receiving a tip-off that six gangsters from Mumbai had put up at a two-storey house in Chengiz Pol in the walled-city locality of Dariapur for the past three-four days.

Only one of the gangsters, Shirish Pawar, who was king-pin of the gang has been identified so far.
