BJP brings in bigwigs to ensure win

Rajinder Nagar recorded a voter turn out of about 50 per cent on Saturday. The overall voter turnout in the city has been about 56.3 per cent.

Elections in the 70th Assembly constituency were rescheduled for Saturday following the death of sitting MLA Puran Chand Yogi on November 16. A three-time MLA, Yogi was being fielded as BJP candidate for the Assembly elections held on November 29 for the fourth time opposite Congress candidate Ramakant Goswami.

Yogi was expected to win this time too. He was, however, allegedly facing trouble from the party workers. In all, 12 candidates were contesting the polls from this constituency. The results will be out on Monday.

The Election Commission had set up 160 polling booths in 32 locations in the constituency for the 1.37 lakh-odd voters. Polling began at 8 am and went on till 5 pm and was peaceful, officials of the state electoral office said.

Stunned by defeat in the elections, the BJP is banking on the popularity of Yogi and has fielded his wife, Asha Yogi (66), against Goswami.

The BJP roped in stalwarts like Madan Lal Khurana and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu for campaigning in the area. Winning MLAs like Surender Pal Ratawal, Manoj Shokeen and Subhash Patel from West Delhi, known to be a BJP stronghold, were also roped in to ensure a win in the area.

However, with the Congress sweeping the Assembly polls with a clear majority of 42 seats, the party is expecting the result to be in favour of Goswami this time.

The Congress candidate is contesting the polls from Rajinder Nagar after he lost his current constituency — Patel Nagar — to delimitation.
