Over 50 people were arrested after pro-democracy activists defying the royal government’s ban on gatherings clashed with riot police, leaving dozens of protesters injured, as night curfew continued here on Sunday.
Arrests were made from Basantapur Durbar Square and other parts of Kathmandu, which remained tense for the third day since the massive crackdown on protest marches organised by the seven-party alliance for restoration of democracy.
Party sources said activists, including students, were arrested for holding rallies in restricted areas and over a dozen others injured. Despite heavy deployment of riot police, the agitators protested in the heart of the city shouting anti-King slogans and the police lathicharged and arrested dozens of agitators.
The government today continued night curfew for five hours beginning 11 pm local time, decreasing curfew time by one hour. Anti-King demonstrations were also held in other parts of Nepal.
