A five-year-old boy died after falling into an open manhole in North-East Delhi on Wednesday evening. The incident took place around 4 pm when Sumit, a resident of Aradhak Nagar in Seemapuri, was playing with his friends in the area. When he did not return home till late, his family started looking for him, but the search proved futile, the police said. As the family resumed its search on Thursday, Sumit’s sister spotted his slippers close to a gutter near the toll tax booth at the Apsara Border. The police were informed and they started a rescue operation with the help of locals. Around 8 am, Sumit’s body was taken out of the sewer and sent for postmortem. The authorities concerned have been summoned to explain why the manhole was left open.
