Five Armymen were killed and seven injured today when their convoy was ambushed by militants at Awantipora on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

The militants, lying in wait in Awantipora area, fired at the convoy around 9.30 am, said Lt Col V.K. Batra, Public Relations Officer (PRO), Defence, adding “Two terrorists appeared from a lane at Awantipora market and attacked the convoy. Three soldiers died on the spot while two succumbed to their injuries later. Seven soldiers were also injured in the attack.”

Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba has claimed responsibility for the ambush.
