The Thane police, investigating the background of Javed Shaikh, who was shot dead in an encounter here on Tuesday, said that the alleged militant had five cases registered against him. However, they have not yet found anything on 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan, who was also gunned down.

Police are still probing the alleged militants’ Lashkar-e-Toiba link. Thane Crime Branch has found that Javed, 30, had five cases registered against him at Mumbra police station and was booked for rioting in 1992. Four cases for grievous criminal trespass were registered against him in 1997.

DCP Amar Yadav of Thane Crime Branch said: ‘‘Javed’s activities ranged from eviction of tenants to rioting. He was found to have been in possession of lethal weapons.’’

However, DCP Yadav could not throw much light on Ishrat’s case. Even after the day-long interrogation of more than 50 people, including her relatives, friends and neighbours, and the detention of more than a dozen people, the Thane team failed to come up with anything conclusive on Ishrat.

A telephone booth owner from where Ishrat used to make regular calls has been detained. DCP Yadav said: ‘‘She had no criminal background, meaning no case has been registered against her in any police station. But this definitely does not rule out her having terrorist links. It could be that her activities went unnoticed as she was only a fledgling.’’
