45 of a marriage party killed in mishap

At least 45 people were killed and 17 others injured when a truck carrying a a marriage party met with an accident near Bhikiyasain in Almora district today.

At least 45 people were killed and 17 others injured when a truck carrying a a marriage party met with an accident near Bhikiyasain in Almora district today.

According to government officials, the marriage party had hired a bus to go to village Manila near Bhikiyasain, but following a quarrel with the driver they decided to hire a truck for the journey.

However, the ill-fated truck with 62 people skidded off the mountain road and fell into a deep gorge killing at least 45 of them. Villagers from the nearby areas rescued the injured.

Chief Minister N D Tiwari expressed shock at the accident and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the mishap and directed district authorities to provide immediate relief to the injured. Tiwari also announced compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the next of the kin of the dead and Rs 25,000 for the injured.
