Four nomads, including two women, were killed and as many injured as they were caught in an exchange of fire between Rashtriya Rifles (RR) troops and militants in Surankote tehsil of Poonch on Sunday evening, the Army said.

But villagers alleged that the victims were gunned down by troops after they mistook the nomads as militants.

The injured include three women and a three-year-old. They have been hospitalised. The killings sparked off tension in the area, with hundreds of people bringing the bodies on the Rajouri-Poonch road to hold a demonstration.

Traffic on the road remained disrupted for over two hours as demonstrators demanded an inquiry. The protesters later called off the agitation on the intervention of senior civil and police officers, who assured them that justice would be done. The bodies were removed from the road and buried.

A senior Army officer said that the victims were caught in the crossfire between a joint patrol of 25-27 RR and militants. The encounter had begun after militants opened fire on the patrol party, the officer added.

A defence spokesman said that reinforcements had been rushed to Hill Kaka and a massive combing operation launched.
