Gujarat High Court on Friday granted bail to Mohammed Kalota and three other suspects in the Godhra carnage but stayed its operation for four weeks, allowing the state to appeal before the Supreme Court.
The court modified its order after Additional Advocate-General Kamal Trivedi sought time for appeal.
Besides Kalota, the others who obtained bail are Salim Shaikh, Shiraj Jamsha and Mohammed Geteli. The court rejected the bail applications of Ishaq Mohammed Mamund and Sulaiman Ahmed Hussain Pir alias Tiger.
The court also granted the prosecution a certificate under Article 134 (a) and 134 (1) (c) to appeal in Supreme Court.
Kalota, a former president of the Godhra Nagarpalika, had first been named the chief conspirator. As a main suspect he was to be put through lie detection tests, but that did not happen. His bail plea said he was at home when the train was attacked.
