July 21: In an unprecedented case of gang-busting, the Pant Nagar police have arrested a gang of four girls involved in house-breaking.
The girls are below the age of 13, while the ringleader is 15 years old. They have been identified as Rekha Gaekwad and her sister Laxmi, Bharti Pawar and Savitri Chavan.
The four were arrested on Sunday afternoon after they broke into a ground floor flat at Om Sheetal Park building in Garodia Nagar, Ghatkopar east. The residents of the flat, Bharti Tavate and her son Sunil Tavate, were away for a while. On returning at 3 pm, they found that their door was open and the flat in a mess. On entering their house, Sunil spotted the girls, who tried to escape through the balcony. The iron grill prevented them from doing so. The girls could be immediately nabbed since Sunil had locked the door from the inside. The Pant Nagar police took them in custody and recovered Rs 1750 from them. After interrogations, they were sent to the children’s home at Dongri.
The girls live in the slums near Kalwa railway tracks. The Gaekwad sisters have no relatives, while Bharti and Savitri live with their widowed mother. According to the senior police inspector of the Pant Nagar police station, the gang has been involved in at least five cases of house-breaking thefts during the day time. Their area of operation spanned from Mulund to Ghatkopar. Only last week, on July 16, they had broken into one Srinivasan Sunder Rajan’s house in Sangeet building, and decamped with a camera, gold ornaments and other valuables worth Rs 46,000.
