The wreckage of the Navy’s Kamov-28 helicopter that crashed on August 19 with six men on board was located this morning, after four days of intensive, joint operations. Bodies of four crew members were found near the site, and a survivor of the crash was rescued. He was airlifted to the Naval Hospital in Goa.

Rescuers have fanned out on the ground to find the missing sixth member, the chopper’s lead air mechanic B.N. Singh. The wreckage was located in the thick forests on the slopes of the Western Ghats in Karnataka, near the border with Goa.

A Navy spokesperson said today that Sandeep Singh, the survivor, was admitted to the Naval Hospital’s ICU, and his condition was stable. The severely injured Singh managed to survive without food or water for four days. The deceased include the chopper’s Navigator Commander Ravinder Nath, pilot Lt Cdr O. Sherawat, and two other ranks A.K. Singh and W. Ravinder.

The Court of Inquiry ordered into the crash has begun its probe and vital components from the chopper have been recovered.
