VADODARA, July 29: Two lions and two horses will not feature in the Great Golden Circus from Thursday, till they are physically fit to perform. This follows instructions by the Vadodara police to the circus managers, after a meeting held between activists of the Gujarat Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) and the managers.Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohan Jha told Express Newsline that the managers have been directed not to force animals to perform, after deputy director of the Animal Husbandry department certified on Monday that two animals were unwell. These developments follow registration of a complaint by GSPCA activists with the Navapura police under Section 11 (1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.The managers assured the DCP that they would take proper care of the animals, for about 300 people depended upon them for their living. They said they would give proper treatment to the animals and also set up proper cages for them. Jha added that policemen, deployed on duty around the circus, would maintain a check in the context. The sick animals will be allowed to perform only after a check by Thakker or any official vet, he said.
