At least 30 Tamil Tigers were killed in a series of clashes with Sri Lankan security forces in the island nation’s embattled north, hours after the deadly LTTE attack on the Anuradhapura air base that left 13 soldiers and 20 guerrillas dead. “At least 15 Tamil Tiger rebels were killed on Monday when a group of LTTE militants tried to sneak into cleared areas of Kaduruvitankulam area,” the army said on Tuesday. The army, quoting sources, claimed that the leader of the rebel group, Shanthi, was also killed in the firing.
In another incident at Parappakandal in Mannar district in north-west of the country on Monday, troops directed a small arms attack on a group of Tiger rebels, the Defence Ministry said, adding troops after intercepting LTTE communication later on confirmed that five rebels suffered fatal injuries in the incident.
