In yet another case of crime inspired by TV serials and movies, the police on Saturday arrested three teenagers from Nava Vadaj area in Naranpura on charges of killing their six-year-old neighbour.

The body of Dhyey Khamb was found from the terrace of a building in Raj Residency society late on Friday. The three boys, aged between 14 and 15, are students of Class IX of a city-based school. While two of them stay with their families in Raj Residency society, the third is a resident of Chandrabhaga Housing Board society in the same area.

The trio had “kidnapped” Dhyey by luring him with chocolates with the intention of “extorting a ransom of Rs 25 lakh from his family”. “The plan was to buy a Scorpio car, load it with swords and guns and move around on city roads…just like their favourite heroes did in a recent Bollywood thriller,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) A D Chudasma.

“The youngest among the three is a die-hard fan of CID and Sansani TV serials. He had recently seen Bollywood thriller Shootout at Lokhandwala, which gave him the ‘kidnap for ransom’ idea.” Chudasma added.
