Three out of 30. That is Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s attendance in the state capital for the month of June. Since the time he has come back from his controversial trip to Canada, thanks to Dixie gurdwara, the CM has hardly been around in office. Today was one such day when a scheduled Cabinet meeting was cancelled because the Chief Minister could not make it to the capital.
This time, however, he was indisposed while on a visit to Delhi to attend the National Development Council (NDC) meeting and was subsequently advised rest by his physician. The reason normally given for CM’s absence is that with the CMO still under renovation, Amarinder prefers to operate from Patiala.
This month, the CM was in town on June 8, 9 and June 24, during which he managed to address two press conferences and handle several meetings, including two at his official residence on his brief visit to the city on June 24.
The council of ministers too has not been meeting frequently enough—Amarinder had resolved to hold regular, weekly or fortnightly meetings of the Cabinet, even if there was no scheduled item on the agenda, a senior minister said. The lone Cabinet meeting of this month was held at Patiala which too was not attended by some Cabinet-rank ministers.
The CM’s senior officials, however, defend his decision to work from home, saying: ‘‘It does not really matter whether the CM is in town or not since the government has been taking important decisions, like the one where a high-ranking committee has been set up today to take care of the high incidence of cancer in Bathinda belt,’’ said a senior official today.
