The situation in Jind worsened today when three farmers were killed in police firing over a road blockade. One person had died in a similar clash yesterday.
Angry villagers did not allow the police to either shift the bodies or take the injured to hospital till late in the evening. In fact, they set on fire an earth mover that the police were using to clear the road and also burnt down a police truck. The policemen had to break out of the BKU siege by firing many rounds.
The clash continued for at least an hour, and after the police managed to come out, the villagers again laid siege to the Jind-Hansi road. Jind is now totally blocked from three sides by the farmers.
Those killed have been identified as Dilbagh, Pratap and Vijendra. A police party, led by Jind DSP Jagwant Lamba, and SDM Inder Singh had begun to clear the Jind-Hansi road near noon and successfully made their way towards Rajpura, a village located near Gulkani.
The farmers had yesterday demolished a small concrete bridge on the road and the police team had managed to fill the gap. It’s after this that the flare-up took place.
Two men, according to the police, and four, according to the farmers, have lost their lives since May 19 when the BKU started its agitation to press for its demands, which include release of its jailed leaders.
