CHANDIGARH, Aug 5: In an operation carried out by the UT Administration, about 25 houses illegally built opposite the Chandigarh Housing Board flats in Sector 55 were demolished here today.

These houses in fact had come up within days after houses at the same site had been demolished in a drive carried out by the Administration. These structures had been constructed on agricultural land and the residents were believed to have been paying a monthly rent in the range of Rs 200-300 to the landlord. A bulldozer was pressed into service to raze the unauthorised constructions. The two-hour operation was supervised by tehsildars M.S. Gill and D.S. Baloria.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Surjeet Singh was also present with his large posse to ensure that no untoward incident took place. "It was a peaceful exercise," said Surjeet Singh.
