CHANDIGARH, May 20: Twenty-three candidates are left in the fray for the June 3 Adampur assembly byelection in Haryana, with candidates withdrawing from the contest on the last day for withdrawal today.

In all, 31 candidates had filed their papers for the byelection. Of these nomination papers of three covering candidates were rejected during scrutiny, while five others withdrew from the contest. The main contenders vying for the battle of ballot in the byelection include Congress nominee Kuldip Singh Bishnoi, son of former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, ruling Haryana Vikas Party nominee Hari Singh, Haryana Lok Dal (R) candidate Rajesh Godara and Pradeep Chowdhary of Bahujan Samaj Party. The byelection has been caused due to the resignation of Bhajan Lal following his election to the Lok Sabha from Karnal in March.
