NEW DELHI, June 24: Two water treatment plants will soon be commissioned and another two will come up in the near future putting an end to the misery of Delhiites. Making a series of announcements, the Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma said that the Delhi government has chalked out an elaborate strategy to meet the Capital’s demand for drinking water with the help of the neighbouring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh (UP).
He said that Haryana has assured that work on 102 kilometre long Munak-Haiderpur channel and UP has said that work on Muradnagar- Sonia Vihar pipeline will be completed as soon as possible.
He announced that the construction of 20 MGD water treatment plant at Bawana would begin on July 5 while a 40 MGD treatment plant at Nangloi would be inaugurated by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on October 2.
A 100 mgd water treatment plant has also been planned in Bakkarwana. “This depended on the construction of the 102-km water channel from Munak (Haryana) to Haiderpur for which the Delhi government has already given Rs. five crore to the Haryana government.”
Besides a 140 MGD capacity plant would also come up in Sonia Vihar for which the water would come through a 28-km channel from Muradpur. “The Delhi government paid Rs six crore to the UP Jal Nigam three years ago for construction of the channel,” disclosed Verma. The Delhi Jal Board has added 550 water tankers to its fleet raising its total strength to 1,020 to cater to the needs of far flung areas.
The fleet will be monitored by a task force specially formed for the purpose, Verma said. The Chief Minister said the jal board has evolved a new computer based mechanism to finalise the tenders regarding developmental works within two weeks of their receipt besides empowering jal board officials to start works of urgent nature costing up to Rs one crore even without inviting tenders.
He also announced setting up of a quality control department in the water board to monitor its construction works.
