Two people — suspected to have links with the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) — were shot dead in an encounter with the police on the busy Western Express Highway in suburban Andheri today. The deaths come a day after Gujarat police shot dead four persons allegedly from the LeT, suspected to have plotted to kill Gujarat CM Narendra Modi.

The police are not sure of the suspects’ exact association with the LeT. Their diaries contained the numbers of terrorists, the police, however, said.

While one of the deceased is still to be identified, the other is Adnan Kirmani Md Khalid alias Abu Salim (28). Mumbai police said they were tipped-off by the Central Intelligence Agency that the suspects were to meet a hawala operator and their mission was to kill a politician in north India.

Salim was among the 16 undertrials who escaped from Aligarh jail last year. Originally from Sitapur in Aligarh, he was named in four murder cases and robberies in Nagpur, Delhi and Bangalore. The police said he visited Nepal and Pakistan recently for obtaining terrorist training. Commissioner A.N. Roy said: ‘‘We recovered a diary with telephone numbers of LeT members in Dubai and Pakistan.’’ Police also recovered four pistols, AK-47 cartridges, two mobile phones and three SIM cards.
