NEW DELHI, July 7: Two persons, including a woman, died and another was injured when a DTC bus rammed two scooters and a motorcycle on the Vikas Marg-Ring Road crossing near the fly-over at ITO this morning.Among the two who died, only one, Surjit Kaur, has been identified. A resident of Raj Garh Colony in Gandhinagar, Kaur was riding pillion on her husband's scooter when the bus, which heading to ITO, hit her vehicle from behind around 9 a.m..Eye-witnesses said that Kaur fell on the road and died on the spot, while her husband S. Singh escaped with minor injuries. The bus, apparently out of control, then hit another scooter. An unidentified Sikh youth, who was driving the vehicle and wearing a helmet over his turban, fell under the wheels of the bus. He too died on the spot. Even as the bus dragged the youth's body, it hit another motor-cyclist. The latter was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital. He is yet to be identified. The bus stopped moving only after the driver managed to swerve it on to a roadside barrier. The driver, Sita Ram, was arrested and the vehicle seized. He reportedly told the police that the brakes had failed, and the momentum of the vehicle carried it down the incline after the ITO bridge.Several eyewitnesses said that Sita Ram was yelling and waving his hands frantically to signal motorists ahead of the bus to move away. The ill-fated two-wheeler drivers apparently neither noticed or heard Sita Ram.DCP (Traffic) M.S. Upadhye said he has requested the DTC to look into the maintenance of buses, especially because Sita Ram's statement and preliminary investigations have indicated that there was a brake failure.
