NEW DELHI, July 29: Former Test batsman Sandip Patil will lead the Indian veterans’ team for the Freedom 50 senior cricket series against Sri Lanka to mark the Golden Jubilee of Independence of the two countries.
The five-match one-day series will be played at Delhi, Agra and Amritsar. The Sri Lankan team will be led by former skipper and manager Duleep Mendis.
“Indians will be playing a crack team with players like Sanjay Manjrekar, Chandrakant Pandit, Kiran More, and Salil Ankola,” Patil had said in a recent press meet here, adding “we will go all out to win the Freedom Fifty Cup.”
The other players in the 16-member Indian squad will be Roger Binny, Praveen Amre, Syed Kirmani, Raghuram Bhatt, K Srikkanth, Ashok Malhotra, Madan Lal, Sanjiv Sharma, Gopal Sharma and Suru Nayak. Rajeev Chaudhari will be the manager of the team.
Under the banner of the newly-formed Senior Cricket Association, with former India batsman and cricket-manager Patil as its president, a series of five limited-overs (40 overs each side) matches will be played between August 25 and September 2.The Lankan side will include among others Duleep Mendis (captain), Sidhath Wettimuny, Lalith Kaluperuma, Asantha de Mel and Somachandra de Silva.
