15,000 Pulse Polio camps being set up

FATEHGARH SAHIB, Dec 1: Director, Health Services and Family Welfare Punjab, Puran Singh Jassi while presiding over a Pulse Polio rally here today, said that even after vaccination, there were upto 20 per cent chances of a child getting Polio, which reemphasised the need for every child upto the age of 5 years to get Polio drops again under the pulse polio programme.

Jassi said 238 cases of Polio were recorded in 1994 in the state and after the six rounds of vaccination, the state had succeeded in eradication of this dreaded disease.

He said there were 30 lakh children upto the age of 5 years in the state for whom 15,000 camps were being put up in all rural and urban areas and 62,000 volunteers had extended their services for the programme.

Besides, 150 teams were also being established which would visit slum ares, brick kilns and even social, religious and political function sites. He also said that additional camps would be established at all railway stations and bus stops.

Jassi also urged the medical staff to keep the vaccine at the prescribed temperature as even a minor negligence could spoil the whole mission.

Speaking on this occasion, T. R. Sarangal, deputy commissioner, Fatehgarh Sahib said that on December 6 and January 17, more than 60,000 children would be administered Polio drops in 530 camps.

Besides, 13 mobile teams have been formed. P. L. Goyal, Civil Surgeon, Fatehgarh Sahib said that 155 countries of the world had eradicated polio and India would be the 156th.

Addressing the gathering, Gursharanjit Singh, Secretary General of the apex body of NGOs said all the 2,800 social welfare organisations in the state would extend a helping hand for this noble cause.

A pulse polio awareness rally was also taken out here today by the school children and an on the spot painting competition was also organised in which Harjinder Kaur of BZFS school got the first position while Varinder Kaur and Kuljita Joshi got the second and third positions.
