After 15 years of legal battle and losing their son in a fake encounter, the parents of Harbinder Singh, resident of Hoshiarpur, were awarded a compensation of Rs 6 lakh by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Alleged to be a terrorist, Harbinder Singh was shot dead in a fake encounter by the Punjab Police in 1993.
Punjab Police had claimed that they were taking Harbinder in a police van to recover arms from a place located in Jalandhar. The recovery was to be affected since the person was shot dead, as per the police.
However, on their way, some terrorists attacked the van and opened fire, during which Harbinder was shot dead. Rubbishing the claims of the Punjab Police, Advocate Ranjan Lakhanpal, counsel for the petitioner submitted that as per the medical report, Harbinder had received two bullet injuries, one on the left side of his head and the other on the back side.
Lakhanpal submitted that the bullets were fired from point blank range by the Punjab Police officials and were later shown to be an encounter. Lakhanpal also proved that the person which the police was claiming to have been shot dead was actually strangulated.
